In a microtome wherein the knife 12, Fig. 1, is held by the projections 14 of a pair of jaws 7, 8 of a clamp 6 held together by screws 11, each projection 14 is provided with a cooling unit. As shown, Fig. 3, the knife 12 is contacted on each side by a plate 23 of silver, copper aluminium or other material of good heat conductivity having loaded to its opposite side a set of peltier cooling junctions 15. A set of peltier heating junctions 17, connected by semiconductor elements 20 to the junctions 15, are bonded to one face of a good heatconducting plate 123 whose opposite face is cooled by water flowing through inlet 21, chamber 18 and outlet 22. A thermistor 24 allows measurement of the temperature of the knife for indication or control. In a modification, Fig. 5, not shown, one projection 14 at each end of the knife 12 is provided with a reservoir through which a cooling fluid may be passed or into which liquid air may be admitted.</p> |
