A method of manufacturing a twisted yarn from at least two component threads comprises a first step of loosely twisting the component threads together and a second step of subjecting the loosely twisted component threads to a final twisting operation. The twist inserted in the first step may be in the same sense as or opposite sense to the final twist. In Fig. 1 one component thread 1<SP>1</SP> is drawn from a fixed bobbin 1 through a hollow spindle 4 on which a spool 2, carrying the second component thread 2 is mounted. The spindle 4 is rotated by a belt 8 to twist thread 2<SP>1</SP> about thread 1<SP>1</SP> to produce a loosely twisted yarn 3<SP>1</SP> which is wound on a flanged bobbin 3. The bobbin 3 is then placed, see Fig. 4, on a spindle 10 and covered by a bell 11 having an aperture 15 through which the yarn may be withdrawn. The spindle 10 is driven to insert the final twist in the yarn and the finished yarn wound into a package 5. The packages 1 and 5 may be of other known forms. The final twist may be inserted by any other type of twister in which the threads are frictionally engaged by non-rotating elements only. If more than two components threads are to be employed more than one thread is wound on the package 1 and/or 2. A stop motion operating upon breakage of the component threads or the loosely twisted yarn, may be provided. |
