Systems and methods for continuous measurement of an analyte in a host are provided. The system generally includes a continuous analyte sensor configured to continuously measure a concentration of analyte in a host and a sensor electronics module physically connected to the continuous analyte sensor during sensor use, wherein the sensor electronics module is further configured to directly wirelessly communicate displayable sensor information to a plurality of different types of display devices.

1. A portable device sized to fit in a user's hand and configured to operably connect to a continuous analyte sensor electronics unit, wherein the portable device comprises a telemetry module, a data storage device and a user interface,
wherein the telemetry module is configured to wirelessly receive sensor data from an electronics unit of a continuous analyte sensor in a plurality of different data transmission formats, wherein the data storage device is configured to store sensor data, wherein the portable device is configured to display sensor data on the user interface, wherein the portable device is configured to receive sensor data in a first, default data transmission format from the continuous analyte sensor while in a default communication mode, wherein the portable device is configured to send a request to the continuous analyte sensor electronics unit comprising an indication to switch to a second data transmission format that is different from the default data transmission format and an indication of requested sensor data, and wherein the portable device is configured to programically switch to a second communication mode to receive responsive sensor data comprising the requested sensor data in the second data transmission format and programically switch back to the default communication mode upon completion of receipt of the responsive sensor data.
