PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical system that enables separation processing to be performed without making unwanted light from a reflection type display element incident upon a dichroic coating even though the system is downsized, and to provide a projector including the optical system.SOLUTION: A three-plate type image projection optical system is configured to: perform a color separation of illumination light L1 by a color separation synthesis prism PB; illuminate an image display surface DS of each of digital micromirror devices D1 to D3 with the illumination light L1 acquired by the color separation; and perform a color separation of projection light L2 for use in an image projection out of reflection light from each of the digital micromirror devices D1 to D3 by the color separation synthesis prism PB. Between the color separation synthesis prism PB and each of the digital micromirror devices D1 to D3, OFF light L3 generated from each of the digital micromirror devices D1 to D3 is configured to be made not incident within the color separation synthesis prism PB, and an unwanted light separation space SP for separating from the projection light L2 is configured to be secured. |
