Crimping pliers comprise a dieholder 18 mounted in the enlarged head of the handle 12 which is positioned between the sides of the head 22 of the U-shaped handle 14, the dieholder being bored at 44 to receive a contact to be crimped, juxtaposed pairs of crimping dies 66, 68; 70, 72 reciprocally mounted in the dieholder, means normally biasing the dies away from the bore, and a floating locator, mounted on the head 22, for positioning a contact in spaced relation in the bore 44, the handle 12 having a cammed die-actuating surface and being rotatable about the periphery of the dieholder to crimp the contact on the conductor. The dieholder 18 has a rectangular die-receiving groove 39 cut in one side 35 and the elliptical locator-receiving aperture 44 which opens into the other side 36 of the dieholder and into the groove 39, the axis of the aperture 44 being offcentre to the axis of the bore. A return plate 54 accommodated in recesses in the side 35 of the dieholder has arms 58, 60 which engage the cam surfaces 34 on the handle 12, a pair of cam surfaces 62, 64 on the plates engaging with pins 136, 138 which connect the dies. In a modification, Fig. 11 (not shown), pegs are secured to the bottom of the groove 39 and elongated slots are provided in dies. The locator 140 comprises a circular body having an opening 142 adapted to receive the tongue of a connector and an outwardly extending flange which engages the outer surface of the head 22 of handle 14. The locator is positioned in the bore 44, the two plates 150, 156 being aligned therewith and the assembly is secured by bolts 28 and nuts. The locator 140 can float in a direction transverse to the central axis of the bore 44, movement being limited at one extreme where the flange 146 strikes the projection 162 on the plate 156 and at the other extreme where the top of the locator strikes the end of the slot 152 in the plate 150. |
