[Also in Division G3] A power-driven tool storage magazine 30 has a rotatable member 38 supported on a frame 31 of a machine tool. The member 38 is rotated by a motor 32 through gearing 36, 37 and is provided with sockets 41, each of which supports a tool 42 in a holder 46. The magazine operates to position a selected tool at a tool ready station where a tool change mechanism 52, by an arm 53, engages the selected tool and tool-holder and interchanges them with a previously selected tool and tool holder, not shown, removed from an operating spindle 56 of the machine. Each tool-holder 46 has a coded collar 61 provided with a plurality of binary coded identifier members 62 which actuate radial fingers 63 carried by a selector mechanism 65 comprising identical readers 66, 67. At a tool-change, the motor 32 rotates the member 38 until the binary code on the tool-holder of the selected tool is read by the selector 65 and the numerical control system is conditioned to stop the tool at the ready station 51 when the switch 70 is actuated. The tool-holder 46 holds a tool by a collet chuck arrangement and the coded collars are adjustable on the tool-holder by a detent mechanism. Specification 946,988 is referred to. |
