616596 A method of real time monitoring of the temperature of reformer tubes in a reformer reactor is disclosed. The method in essence comprises measuring the length of each tube and using that measurement to calculate the temperature of the tube. This information can be used to provide a real time indication of the temperature distribution and overheat monitoring/protection of a reformer in real time and allow for estimation of tube life.
