Vitrifiable raw materials are preheated by their passage down a shaft 3 in countercurrent to fumes rising from a crucible 2 below the level of the preheating shaft, and screened from heat radiated from the melt by screens 11, 13 reflecting heat back towards the melt. The baffles are of refractory material with a coating 20 of heat-reflecting material such as platinum on their lower faces. In a modification, the crucible is offset from the shaft 3, and the roof 17 of the crucible has a reflecting lining 20, a baffle 11 screening the preheating zone from indirect radiation from the melt.</p> |
