Disclosed are a battery management system, which prevents a source voltage from being disconnected by an erroneous external signal, and a method of controlling the battery management system. The battery management system according to the present invention is a battery management system for controlling charging and discharging of a secondary battery, comprising: a communication line which is connected to an external device to enable transmission and reception of data; a first power line to which a switch, which is turned on and off by the external device, is connected; a second power line to which a switch, which is turned on and off by a control signal, is connected; and a control unit which requests an acknowledgment value through the communication line, when a command to turn off the battery management system is received from the external device, and outputs the control signal for turning off the switch connected to the second power line, when the value received through the communication line is matched with a preset acknowledgment value. |
