Binder including (i) a chitosan derivative and (ii) deionized water or 1 vol. % aqueous solution of acetic acid as a dispersant. A method for preparing an electrode of a lithium ion battery by adding the binder to a conductive agent.

A binder comprising a chitosan derivative represented by formula I or II, the binder employing deionized water or an aqueous solution comprising 1 vol. % of acetic acid as a dispersant; wherein, X of the formula I represents a hydrocarbon acyl, aromatic acyl, alkyl, or aryl, and Y of the formula II represents an alkane acyl or aryl.
