TIMING, RANGE AND LOCATION DETERMINING METHOD AND APPARATUS

An apparatus for determining the time of arrival of a direct path component of a multipath signal. The apparatus comprising: a wireless communication interface for receiving a signal transmitted from a first device, the signal comprising the direct-path component and a plurality of indirect-path components wherein each component comprises a delayed version of the transmitted signal; a data store storing a model of the received signal; and a controller, coupled to the wireless communication interface and to the data store, wherein the controller is configured to: truncate the received signal to select a portion, b, of the signal associated with a selected time interval; obtain a set of basis functions based on the model of the received signal, wherein each basis function comprises the model shifted by a different respective delay and each delay is less than the selected time interval; fit the portion of the received signal using the set of basis functions to determine the time of arrival of the direct-path component.
