Apparatus for the biological purification of domestic and industrial waste water comprises a cylindrical tower 3, filled with a surface contact medium such as lava slag or coke 6, and provided at its lower end with an inlet 2 for the waste water and for air in excess, and at its upper end with an outlet 8 for the purified water and for dying sludge, which, as described, flow into a settling tank for the sludge. Mechanically pre-purified waste water is fed to the inlet by a pump 1 and is passed through a restriction 4, into which, due to the reduction in pressure, the air is drawn through a pipe 5. Baffles 12 of, e.g., sheet metal, may be fitted to ensure that the air does not pass directly up the sides of the tower; A coneshaped roof 9 may be mounted over the upper end of the tower with a pipe 10 for discharging foamed-out detergents.
