Disclosed is a method of controlling an exhaust gas recirculation system of an internal combustion engine 110. The engine comprises a compressor 240, an intake manifold 200, an aftertreatment system 280, a low pressure exhaust gas recirculation system, EGR 324, and a high pressure exhaust gas recirculation system, EGR 300. The method temporarily adjusts a low pressure EGR ratio, keeping constant a total EGR rate, after verifying at least one of a set of parameters including compressor parameters, aftertreatment system parameters or an intake manifold parameter. The low pressure EGR ratio (LP_EGR ratio) and the total EGR rate are defined by the following equations: LP_EGR ratio = LP_EGR rate / (LP_EGR rate + HP_EGR rate) total EGR rate = LP_EGR rate + HP_EGR rate where: LP-EGR rate: gas flowrate through the low pressure EGR system HP-EGR rate: gas flowrate through the high pressure EGR system |
