994,322. Centrifugal pumps. R. A. COLLET. Aug. 30, 1962 [Sept. 8, 1961; April 9, 1962], No. 33411/62. Heading F1C. [Also in Divisions B2, G1 and H2] The magnetic coupling between a motor 2 and a centrifugal pump 1 comprises a driven permanent magnet rotor 10 enclosed within a cup-shaped, non-magnetic, fluid tight partition 6 which is surrounded by a bell-shaped driving permanent magnet rotor 8. The magnets 14 in driving member 8 comprising horse-shoe shaped inserts of a material having a high remanent induction (greater than 10000 gauss) such as "Ticonal" (Trade Mark), and the driven member magnet comprising an annular ring of material having high coercivity (greater than 1500 oersteds) and whose characteristics are unaffected by heat, such as a hard ferrite e.g. Ferroxdur I. In order to obtain the optimum efficiency of the coupling the position of the horse-shoe magnets is critical and the method of obtaining this position for various lengths of air gap is described. The parts of both the driving and driven rotors which support the permanent magnets are of non-magnetic material, e.g. light alloy or plastics.
