994,141. Dry-spinning apparatus. PHRIXWERKE, A.G. April 27, 1964 [June 14, 1963], No. 17349/64. Heading B5B. A dry-spinning apparatus incorporates a liquid seal in the outlet for the filaments. As shown a spinning shaft 1 has a hollow element 3, preferably funnel-shaped, in the base of the shaft, water or other sealing liquid being supplied to the funnel 3 by pipe 6. Valve 5 enables the amount of liquid to be controlled, suitably so that the amount added corresponds to the amount the bundle of filaments can carry adhering to their surfaces. The solvent vapour-air mixture in the shaft is withdrawn at outlet 2 for removal of solvent and recycling. The water or other sealing liquid, e.g. glycerol, glycols, or glycol ethers prevents the individual filaments sticking together or to the wall of the funnel despite the small size of the latter (e.g. a funnel of outlet diameter 4 mm. may be used with a spinneret having 200 orifices), but as a further precaution the funnel may be made of a fluorinated hydrocarbon resin e.g. poly tetrafluoroethylene. The spinning of polyacrylonitrile and copolymers or mixed polymers containing at least 80% acrylonitrile is described.
