[Also in Division H1] A fitting for a mercury vapour fluorescent discharge lamp or lamps has a block 12 of high thermal conductivity, e.g. copper or aluminium, extending through and movably supported within, an aperture 13 in the wall 10 of the fitting in a region between a pair of lampholders 8, 9 so as to be engaged and moved from a rest position by a part of the envelope 5 of a lamp lying, e.g. centrally, between the lamp electrodes when the lamp is fitted into the lampholders, the block 12 being biased towards the rest position so that it bears against the envelope when the lamp is supported in its operative position and effects a local cooling of the envelope for achieving an operating temperature of about 40‹ C. The block 12 can be biased towards its rest position by gravity with or without one or more spring members. The wall 10 can be a cover plate for a metal channelshaped body 1 or can be the base of the body 1 if it is arranged in an inverted position. The part of the block 12 which engages the envelope 5 can be shaped to conform with the shape of the envelope in the contact region. At least one flexible thermally conducting member can be connected between the block 12 and part of the body 1. A light-transmitting enclosure 11 is removably secured to the body 1 to surround the lamp or lamps. |
