In a constant-velocity ratio universal joint of the type comprising balls 6 engaged in race grooves 2, 5 in part-spherical outer and inner members 1, 4 formed on or connected to shafts 3, 14 respectively, the balls 6 being located in apertures in a part-spherical cage 7 positioned between the members 1, 4, a stop is provided to limit the extreme joint angularity and thus prevent the shaft 14 engaging the open-ended ball grooves 2 in the outer member 1 and thus locking the joint. As shown, the lock stop comprises a cylindrical surface 15 in the outer member 1 which is engaged by a chamfer 16 on the shaft 14 at maximum safe joint angu- 'larity. In Fig. 2 (not shown), a stop plate 17 at the outer end of the outer member has a tapered bore 18 which serves to engage and limit safe movement of the shaft 14.</p> |
