A tube 1 of sintered material containing at least one impeller 5 is rotated to drive a liquidsolid mixture introduced at end 7 along the tube, the liquid filtering outwards through the tube walls and the solid emerging from end 8. Impeller 5 is of spiral form and is fixed to tube 1, which is rotated through a belt drive engaging one element 2, the other elements 2 being bearings, Fig. 2 (not shown). An elongated dish 6 partially surrounds tube 1 to catch liquid draining therefrom, which leaves the dish at takeoff 10. Feed pipe 13 supplies a flocculating agent to the mixture. As shown, tube 1 slopes upwards and the "mud" is made to pass up the slope. The tube 1 comprises sputtered, sprayed or preferably spherical sintered particles, of chrome-nickel steel, bronze, polystyrene, polytetrafluorethylene or glass.
