<PICT:1007526/C6-C7/1> A method of making a tubular structure surrounding a solid or hollow core 135, Fig. 19, comprises feeding around the heated core finely divided material 147 from a protective atmosphere, and compacting the material against the core to solidify the material and bond it to the core. The powder 147 or the core may be of silicon carbide, copper, nickel or tungsten. The core may also be of silver or molybdenum. Hoppers 149, 151, 171, 173 supply the powder to the nip between rolls 131, 133 which compact it against the core. Electrically conductive cores are heated by a transformer 139. The powder is heated by heaters 159, 161. Inert gas enters the hopper 149, 151 and a retort 137 through openings 165, 163, and escapes through passages 179, 181.ALSO:<PICT:1007526/C1/1> A method of making a tubular structure surrounding a solid or hollow core 135, Fig. 19, comprises feeding around the heated core finely divided material 147 from a protective atmosphere, and compacting the material against the core to solidify the material and band it to the core.
