The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition for preventing or treating cancer and a food composition for preventing or alleviating cancer, wherein a Machaeriumcuspidatum extract is included as an active ingredient. The composition including the Machaeriumcuspidatum extract of the present invention does not exhibit toxicity in normal cells but induces the apoptosis of cancer cells to exhibit a cancer cell killing effect. Accordingly, the composition can be usefully used as an anticancer composition so as to be used as the pharmaceutical composition or the food composition for preventing or treating cancer.
