Methods and apparatus for efficiently transporting data through network tunnels. In one embodiment, a tunneled device advertises certain capabilities to peer devices of a network, and discovers capabilities of peer devices of the network. In a second embodiment, each device of a tunneled network derives a network parameter from a transit protocol parameter for use in data networking.

1. A method for prioritizing data traffic within a network, comprising:
discovering one or more devices associated with one or more prioritized classes within a network having a network protocol; reserving, in response to the discovering, one or more transit resources of a transit protocol different than the network protocol for use by the one or more devices associated with the one or more prioritized classes; for at least a period of time, only routing data for the one or more devices associated with the one or more prioritized classes over the corresponding reserved one or more transit resources; where routing the data comprises embedding the network protocol in the transit protocol; and where at least one network protocol parameter is determined based at least in part on a transit parameter of the transit protocol.
