METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR IMPROVING IMAGE QUALITY USING SINGULAR VALUE DECOMPOSITION

The present invention provides a method and an apparatus for improving image quality by increasing contrast using singular value decomposition (SVD). The method includes the steps of: calculating a first singular value by executing the SDV on an input image; calculating a second singular value by executing the SDV on a histogram-equalization image obtained from the input image; calculating an adjustable singular value by using the first singular value, the second singular value, and characteristics-based parameters; and generating an image with increased contrast by using the adjustable singular value as a singular value. By adjusting the singular values, low contrast of images with various brightness can be increased, and noise can be eliminated at the same time.
