An apparatus for selecting a preceding vehicle determines the width information showing a relative position, a relative speed, and the side direction width about each object at the front. A side direction position of the object at the front about a driving direction of an inductive vehicle is determined by suing the width information of the object at the front. An inductive vehicle lane probability is calculated about each object at the front based on the relative position of the object at the front in which the side direction position is corrected. The preceding vehicle is selected from the object at the front based on the calculated inductive vehicle lane probability. As a correction amount in the side direction position is reduced as an error of the side direction position or an error of the width information increases based on the value of correlation parameters which have interrelation with the error of the side direction position or the error of the width information. |
