[Class 39 (iii)] A furnace roof 11 is formed with a depression 12 around the aperture 13 for the electrode 10. A cooling ring 14 is supported, independently of the furnace roof, by beams 15, and carries a ring 16, both rings dipping into a sand seal in the depression 12. In another form, a flange depending from the cooling ring dips into an annular sand seal. The cooling ring is supported from the roof ring around the periphery of the refractory roof, or from the auxiliary ring on which the roof ring rests, both rings being independent of the deformations of the refractory roof.
