A method of operating a mobile terminal including a gesture recognition module is provided. The method includes externally radiating an infrared light; recognizing a user gesture based on a reflected infrared light; extracting an infrared signal variation and detecting a movement of the gesture based on the infrared signal variation; and performing a function of the mobile terminal corresponding to the detected movement of the gesture.
