Laundry Additives from Crude Protein Sources

Modified protein compositions that provide benefits in laundry products are produced by minimal processing of crude protein sources. Modifications include reaction with one or more of 1) cationic functional agents, 2) anionic functional agents, 3) proteolytic enzymes, 4) redudng agents and 5) oxidizing agents. They may be complexed with a surfactant to improve the separation from insoluble cellulosic carbohydrate materials in the crude protein sources, and to improve their dispersibility and effectiveness in laundry products. The resulting products may provide benefits of preventing soil redeposition, preventing dye transfer, soil repellency, and fabric wear reduction in laundry operations. The invention also encompasses the laundry products comprising the protein compositions.

1. A composition that provides benefits in laundry products comprising a crude protein source, said crude protein source comprising at least about 20 percent protein by weight, wherein the crude protein source is modified by at least one of
i. addition of a cationizing reagent ii. addition of an anionizing reagent iii. enzyme hydrolysis iv. reaction with an oxidizing agent v. reaction with a reducing agentand wherein at least about 70 percent by weight of the composition of the crude protein source is present in the benefit providing composition.
