METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR CELL RESELECTION

A method of reselecting a mobile wireless communication device to a network subsystem before initiating a connection with a wireless communication network. A connection request is received by the mobile wireless communication device in response to a user input. Attributes of signals received by the mobile wireless communication device from multiple network subsystems in the wireless communication network are measured over a period of time. The mobile wireless communication device is associated with one of the network subsystems and not associated with other network subsystems. The mobile wireless communication device reselects to one of the network subsystems based on quality metrics generated from the measured received signal attributes. After reselection, the mobile wireless communication device initiates a connection through the reselected network subsystem.

1. A method for cell reselection by a mobile user equipment (UE), the method comprising:
after receiving a call origination request and before originating a call via a wireless network in response to the call origination request:
obtaining a set of serving cell performance metrics for a serving cell associated with the mobile UE;comparing the set of serving cell performance metrics for the serving cell to a set of corresponding performance thresholds;when the set of serving cell performance metrics do not satisfy the set of corresponding performance thresholds, obtaining a set of neighboring cell performance metrics for a neighboring cell;determining whether the neighboring cell is suitable for cell reselection based on the set of serving cell performance metrics and the set of neighboring cell performance metrics; andreselecting from the serving cell to the neighboring cell when the neighboring cell is suitable for cell reselection.
