PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative electrode material for a secondary battery, capable of improving cycle characteristics thereof furthermore by improving adhesion between a Si particle and a covering material.SOLUTION: A negative electrode material 1 (a negative electrode material for a secondary battery) constitutes an active material layer 11 formed on a collector layer 10 of a negative electrode 100. The negative electrode material 1 includes: a Si particle 2; a Ni-P plating layer 3 containing Ni formed on a surface 2a of the Si particle 2; and a Ni-Si reaction layer 4 formed on an interface 1a between the Si particle 2 and the Ni-P plating layer 3 and containing at least Ni and Si.
