In a gas blast circuit-breaker of the kind having a tubular movable blast valve member 4 surrounding and supporting a plurality of resiliently mounted contact members 7 for bridging a pair of fixed nozzle contacts 1, 2, the valve member 4 co-operates with a valve disc 9 mounted upon and slidable over a short distance along one nozzle 2. The space within the nozzles 1, 2 is at low pressure while the surrounding space is at high pressure. To initiate opening a space 6 is vented causing the high pressure to drive valve member 4 upwards against a spring 5. Since a space 2a is at the low pressure the high pressure on the underside of a piston 9a attached to valve disc 9 causes the latter to follow the valve member 4 upwards until it strikes an abutment on nozzle 2. The member 4 having achieved an appreciable speed, the valve opens initiating the blast. Since space 2a is then filled with high-pressure gas while a space 2b on the other side of a second piston 9b remains at low pressure the valve disc 9 is driven back to its initial position. |
