PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide techniques for allocating resources for use in transmitting reference signals (RSs) to facilitate channel estimation.SOLUTION: A method comprises: identifying a set of available channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS) patterns defining resources for use in transmitting a CSI-RS in a subframe from multiple antenna ports 602; identifying a subset of the set of available CSI-RS patterns on the basis of a transmission configuration 604; selecting one of the CSI-RS patterns from the subset 606; and transmitting CSI-RS in the subframe according to the selected CSI-RS pattern 608.
