PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic shock absorber which has a simple and small structure and consumes less power.SOLUTION: A hydraulic shock absorber D includes: an extension side passage 3 and a pressure side passage 4 communicating an extension side chamber R1 with a pressure side chamber R2; an extension side valve element Ve for opening/closing the extension side passage 3; a pressure side valve element Vp for opening/closing the pressure side passage 4; an extension side back pressure chamber Ce for energizing the extension side valve element Ve; a pressure side back pressure chamber Cp for energizing the pressure side valve element Vp; a communication passage 24 communicated with the extension side back pressure chamber Ce via an extension side resistance element Pe and communicated with the pressure side back pressure chamber Cp via a pressure side resistance element Pp; an extension side pressure introduction passage Ie communicating the extension side chamber R1 with the pressure side back pressure chamber Cp; a pressure side pressure introduction passage Ip communicating the pressure side chamber R2 with the extension side back pressure chamber Ce; a regulation passage Pc connected to the communication passage 24; and a solenoid pressure control valve 6 provided in the regulation passage Pc for controlling an upstream pressure in the regulation passage Pc.
