An end-openable box, made from a single blank, is brought to a form where it is ready for top-loading, Fig. 13 (not shown), by a vertically reciprocable mandrel 63, Fig. 1 (not shown), which co-operates with four pairs of folders. Blanks are fed from a loading station 35 on to a table 43 by means of a suction cup 44 and then transferred by a cross-head 58, firstly to a glue station 36 where adhesive from nozzles 61 is applied to flaps 28 and thence to a forming station, Fig. 3. The mandrel 63 contacts bottom panel 27 when moved downwardly and together they rotate a plate 78 fixed to axle 76. Rotation of axle 76 causes rotation of axles 84 by means of links 85 and hence of the pairs of folders 81, 83, 91, 92 which respectively operate on side panel 31, side flaps 32, side flaps 26 and side panel 25. A pair of horizontal mandrel arms 96, Fig. 11 (not shown), fixed to the mandrel, cause outward folding of top panel 22 when side panel 25 is folded upwardly. To allow continued downward movement of the mandrel arms 96, the folders 92 are rotatable about pins 93, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), and rotate in a vertical plane when the folders are in their final folding position. Finally, flaps 28 are brought into contact with rollers 95, Fig. 13 (not shown), which fold these flaps upwardly and cause them to adhere to flaps 26, 32. After filling, the box is closed by attaching flap 24 to side panel 31, and the contents are subsequently removed through one or other of the ends of the box. |
