In apparatus for charging oxide and breaking crusts in a row of aluminium electrolytic furnaces arrival of a wheeled framework 1 bridging the furnaces 17 and carrying oxide hoppers 4 and a crust breaker 10 opposite the first furnace engages contacts 18 on the framework and contacts 19 on the furnace temporarily stopping motors 3 driving bogies 2, bringing the crust breaker into operation, and opening valve 13 in a hopper feed shoot 14. After the initial delay giving time for the crust breaker to pierce the crust, motors 3 start up again and the machine moves to the end of the furnace, feeding oxide into the lane consequently formed in the crust, whereupon the crust breaker is stopped and valve 13 closed, the machine proceeding to the next furnace. At the end of a row of furnaces, wheels 15 are lowered by hydraulic devices 16 and driven by motors to move the framework transversely over the next row of furnaces.
