The rollers of the parent Specification which transfer a longitudinally seamed tube 12<SP>1</SP> from an auxiliary mandrel 4 to a main mandrel 16, on which bag bottom folding and welding operations are performed, are replaced in the present Specification by a pair of tongs 24 slidable in a groove 29 of the main mandrel 16. In the embodiment shown the tongs 24 comprise an upper jaw fixed to a tongs slide 25 slidable on bars 26 under the action of a lever 27, and a lower jaw pivoted to the tongs slide, urged into closed position by a spring 33 but openable by raising an opening rail 30 on levers 32. A tube 12<SP>1</SP> is formed and sealed on the mandrel 4 which then slides axially so that the tube is inserted between the jaws of the tongs which are brought to the position shown in broken lines. The jaws are then closed and slide to the position shown in solid lines drawing the tube 12<SP>1</SP> with them from the auxiliary mandrel 4 to the main mandrel 16 till it abuts a stop 34. The jaws then release the tube and the main mandrel rotates to its next position as the tongs return to their original position. |
