A surgical waste collection unit with a receiver for removably holding a manifold to which suction lines are connected. The receiver is mounted to the waste collection unit to be at an acute angle relative to the horizontal. The receiver is further configured to allow the manifold to be rotated in the receiver. This means the manifold can be rotated from a first position in which the manifold outlet opening is aligned with the conduit through which waste is flowed from the receiver and a second position in which the manifold outlet opening is elevated relative to the first position.

1. A medical/surgical waste collection assembly, said assembly including:
a manifold, said manifold including:
a housing with opposed proximal and distal ends, longitudinal axis that extends in the between the ends; an outlet opening in the proximal end, the proximal opening being axially offset from the longitudinal axis that extends through the manifold; anda fitting that extends from the distal end of the manifold, said fitting shaped to receive a suction line through which waste is drawn into the manifold; and a waste collection unit including:
a first container for holding medical/surgical waste;a vacuum regulator connected between a suction source and said container, said vacuum regulator configured to selectively apply suction from the suction source to said container to regulate the level of suction the suction source draws on said container; anda first receiver attached to said container, said first receiver having: a bore dimensioned to receive said manifold, the bore having an open distal end into which said manifold is inserted, and at least a partially closed proximal end and a longitudinal axis between the ends along which the manifold is inserted in the bore, the longitudinal axis being at an angle that, relative to a horizontal plane, is greater than 2° and less than 90° such that the distal end of bore is located above the proximal end of the bore; a base that defines the partially closed proximal end of the bore; a conduit that extends from an opening in said base into said container so that suction drawn on said container is drawn through the opening; and wherein said first receiver is further configured to allow said manifold to rotate in the bore from a first position in which the manifold outlet opening is in registration with the opening into the conduit and a second position in which the manifold outlet opening is located above the first position.
