[Also in Group XXV] A clamp comprises top and bottom superposed elongated members 12, 10 each comprising a handle 30, 14 and a clamping portion 28, 18, the handle of one of the members being angularly related to the handle of the other member, whereby manipulation of the handles together and apart is effective to rock the members upon each other, to open and close the clamping portions, means 22 on one of the members engaging means 40 on the other member to hold said members against shifting relatively to each other, the clamping portion of the top member having a chamber 48 therein provided with a bottom wall and an open end facing towards the handle, the bottom member having an integral spring tongue 24 attached at its root to the handle and having a free end extending towards the clamping portion, the free end of said spring tongue being slidably engaged in said chamber in contact with the bottom wall whereby the spring tongue tends to hold the members in assembled relationship and to urge the clamping portions towards their closed position. As shown the top member is made of a moulded plastic material such as polystyrene and the bottom member is made of sheet material. The means 40 are sockets in the top member and the means 22 are spurs struck up from the material of the bottom member and engageable with the sockets 40. The bottom wall of the chamber has a tapered portion 52 which serves to gradually prestress the tongue as it enters the chamber during the assembly of the clamp. The clamping portion of each member has a pair of legs and the legs of the top member are serrated or provided with comb teeth. |
