A stereoscopic image display apparatus including: a light source unit (112m and 112h) which emits light; a light guide plate (113) having an incidence surface on which the light emitted by the light source unit is incident and an emission surface from which the incident light is emitted with a propagation direction thereof changed; and a liquid-crystal panel (115) which spatially modulates the light emitted from the emission surface, and the light source unit emits the light so that the light is incident on the incidence surface in the first and second directions for the right and left eyes of a viewer, which are different from each other and each inclined at a predetermined angle in the emission surface with respect to a reference direction perpendicular to an alignment direction of the right and left eyes of the viewer, and the light emitted from the emission surface of the light guide plate is in a direction which is determined according to the propagation direction of the incident light and in which a component in the alignment direction, included in the propagation direction, is maintained.
