The machinery brake (20) of an elevator hoisting machine comprises a frame part (1), an armature part (2) that is movable with respect to the frame part (1) and is installed at the end of the air gap (10) from the frame part (1), said armature part being moved by means of an electromagnet (5, 6) that is in the frame part (1) towards the frame part (1) for opening the machinery brake (20) and by means of one or more work springs (4) acting between the frame part (1) and the armature part (2) for closing the machinery brake (20), and a damping arrangement (40) for damping the opening noise between the frame part (1) and armature part (2).
