The switch has two electronic switches (4,7) and a sensor (9) for an actuator (10). A controller (8) activates the electronic switches in response to an actuation of the sensor, and is coupled to the output contacts (2,3,5,6) to detect signals of differing switching states at the output contacts. Safety logic circuitry is provided for switching off the electronic switches in the event of a failure. The sensor is typically a mechanical, electrical, optical and/or inductive sensor. Independent claims are included for a safety circuit, and for a method of monitoring the operation of a safety switch.
