In a process for polymerizing vinyl chloride in an aqueous system in a reaction vessel, a sulphur-containing organometallic compound that retards polymerization and in which the metal has a valency of at least 2 and the sulphur is covalently bound is added to the aqueous medium in the reaction vessel while unreacted monomeric vinyl chloride is still present in said reaction vessel. Depending on whether the compound has a lesser or greater retarding effect the compound can be added during polymerization or act as a short stop.
