The engine has an exhaust gas re-circulation (EGR) line, an EGR valve arranged in the line to control an EGR amount and a controller to control the valve. The EGR controller performs control of scavenging the line by opening the valve at the time of reducing vehicle speed. The controller also performs control of opening of an intake throttle valve up to a predetermined opening at the time of scavenging the line.
