Paper composed of acrylic fibres is made translucent by treatment with a compound of phosphorus. The paper may be that of Specifications 952,703 or 959,977. The translucidizing agent may be 2, 3-dibromopropyl phosphate, phosphoric acid, phytic acid or a halogen-substituted aliphatic ester of a complex acid which contains phosphorus-to-carbon linkages and from 1 to 3 pentavalent phosphorus atoms and perhaps also a trivalent phosphorus atom in the molecule. It may be applied by immersing the paper in an aqueous or alcoholic solution of the agent, removing the paper from the solution and drying.
