In a colour television camera system, Fig. 3, in which component images of a common scene are formed on separate pick-up tubes 2R, 2G, 2B, the scanning rasters in the tubes are maintained in identical size and positional relationship with the respective images (thereby ensuring the production of video signals which may be utilized in combination without loss of picture resolution) by a retroactive control system which responds to register marker pulses produced at the beginning and end of each scanned line and frame due to the inclusion in the common optical path to the tubes of a mask Fig. 2, in which the image defining area 20 is surrounded by a border 24, 25 illuminated by internal lamps. The pulses are separated from the generated video signals by gate stages 72, 74, 76, 78 (four for each tube, labelled R, G and B respectively) which are controlled by gating pulses Pc, Pa, P<SP>1</SP>c and P<SP>1</SP>a produced by generator 80 synchronized by the common synchronizing and blanking system 1, 46, 56. The pulses produced at the start of a line, which are obtained via gates 72, are employed to control the application of shift signals to the horizontal scan generators 38, whilst the pulses produced at the end of each line, which are obtained via gates 74, are employed to control the application of size (or slope) control signals to the scan generator. Similar operations are performed on the vertical scan generators 40 by the pulses produced at the beginning and end of each frame and which are obtained via gates 76 and 78. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the raster produced in the tube 2G for a green image acts as a reference against which the rasters for red and blue tubes 2R, 2B are adjusted. To this end the pulses from the green gates 72G-78G are compared in phase with the pulses from the corresponding red gates 72R-78R in a first set of comparators 82GR-88GR to produce signals to control the red scan generators 38R, 40R, and are also compared with pulses from the corresponding blue gates 72B-78B in a second set of comparators 82GB-88GB to produce signals to control the blue scan generators. In a first modification, Fig. 8 (not shown), independent reference pulses are supplied from the gate pulse generator 80 and are supplied to comparators for the red, blue and green tubes so that all three rasters are referred to the independent pulses and in the process also brought into agreement. A second modification, Fig. 9 (not shown), is a combination of the first and second embodiment in so far as the green raster is controlled with respect to the independent reference pulses from the gate pulse generator, whilst the red and blue rasters are controlled with reference to the green raster. A third embodiment, Fig. 10 (not shown), utilizes the arrangement of Fig. 9 to control the red and blue rasters with reference to the green raster and to control the size of the green raster with reference to independent reference pulses, but the position of the green raster is controlled by a method which involves delaying the end-ofscan pulses and comparing them with the startof-scan pulses. Where one of the tubes is employed to produce a luminance image, the raster in this tube is used as the reference raster. The invention has application to an arrangement in which a circular picture area is scanned by spiral scanning, Fig. 15 (not shown). In this arrangement the register marker pulses are derived in response to a mark produced in the centre of the image, a radial line extending outwardly from the circumference of the picture and a line defining the picture circumference to control respectively the position, angular shift and size of the rasters. Detailed transistor circuits generally of known form and suitable for use in rectangular (line and frame) scanning systems of Figs. 3, 8, 9 and 10 are described with reference to Figs. 11-14 (not shown). The register marker pulses may be transmitted with the video signal to permit the raster control to be performed at the receiver.</p>
