System and method for uplink multiple input multiple output transmission

Methods and apparatuses are provided for uplink MIMO transmissions in a wireless communication system. In some particular aspects, scheduling of the uplink MIMO transmissions may make a determination between single stream, rank=1 transmissions and dual stream, rank=2 transmissions based on various factors. Further, when switching between single and dual stream transmissions in the presence of HARQ retransmissions of failed packets, the scheduling function may determine to transmit the HARQ retransmissions on a single stream transmission or to transmit the HARQ retransmissions on one stream while transmitting new packets on the other stream.

1. A method of wireless communication, comprising:
transmitting a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) uplink to a Node B utilizing a first stream and a second stream on a same carrier, wherein the first stream comprises a first data channel and a control channel, and the second stream comprises a second data channel, wherein the control channel is configured to carry control information associated with both the first data channel and the second data channel, wherein the first stream is transmitted utilizing a primary precoding vector and the second stream is transmitted utilizing a secondary precoding vector orthogonal to the primary precoding vector; receiving hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) feedback indicating a decoding failure of a packet on the first stream transmitted utilizing the primary precoding vector and a decoding success of a packet on the second stream transmitted utilizing the secondary precoding vector; receiving a command to transmit a single stream only; allocating power from the second stream to the first stream such that the first stream has increased power relative to a power of either of the first stream and second stream in a dual stream mode; and transmitting a HARQ retransmission corresponding to the decoding failure of the packet on the first stream, on the first stream at the increased power.
