A process wherein at least one quaternary ammonium chloride salt having a quaternary ammonium ion corresponding with one of the following formulae is polymerized in a polar liquid medium with the aid of a free radical polymerization catalyst in which formulae, each of A and B (the same or different represents an alkyl or phenyl radical, either unsubstituted or carrying a substituent which is not polymerizable in the presence of a free radical initiator and does not inhibit or retard polymerization processes; or A and B together represent -CH2-CH2-, CH(CH3)-CH(CH3)-, -CH=CH-CH=CH-, -CH=CH-CH=N-, or -CH=CH-N=CH-; each of R and R1 (the same or different) represents an atom or group which is nonpolymerizing and does not inhibit or retard the polymerization; X represents a divalent radical of the formula -CH2-(O)n-(CH2)m; Y represents a divalent radical of the formula -(CH2)p-(O)n-CH2-; and Z represents a divalent radical of the formula -(CH2)p-(O)n-(CH2)2-, in which formula for X, Y and Z: u is 0 or 1, m is 1 or 2 and p is 2 or 3, or in which formula A1 represents hydrogen or a substituent which is itself nonpolymerizing and does not inhibit or retard the polymerization, and R2 has the same significance as R or R1 in the formula previously set out herein. The usual catalyst and solvents are used. Polydiallyldimethylammoniu chloride is claimed per se.
