A detection target substance detecting method for detecting a detection target substance which may be contained in a liquid sample, comprising: employing a detecting chip equipped with: a flow channel member having a flow channel through which the liquid sample is caused to flow; a sensor portion formed at a first predetermined region on a wall surface of the flow channel, at which an immobilized binding substance that specifically binds with the detection target substance is immobilized; and an acoustic absorber provided at least at one of a predetermined portion of the flow channel member corresponding to the first predetermined region and a predetermined portion of the flow channel member corresponding to a second predetermined region upstream of the first predetermined region along the flow channel; causing the liquid sample and an amount of a labeling binding substance that contains a labeling substance, which is to be immobilized onto the sensor portion, corresponding to an amount of the detection target substance to flow into the flow channel; emitting ultrasonic waves toward the acoustic absorber in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the flow channel when the liquid sample passes through an ultrasonic wave emission region at which ultrasonic waves can be emitted; emitting a measuring light beam onto the sensor portion; detecting signal light generated by the labeling substance as a result of emission of the measuring light beam; and measuring the amount of the labeling binding substance immobilized onto the sensor portion based on an amount of the signal light, to detect the detection target substance.
