<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focus adjustment device which can detect a true focal point through minimal lens movement even when a cyclically patterned object is detected and which enables a high-speed AF system.SOLUTION: A focal adjustment device receives a pupil-divided object image through an image capturing lens and photoelectrically converts the image to generate image data, and performs focus adjustment operation based on the image data. The focal adjustment device includes a phase difference detection unit which detects (a) high-correlation extremum(s) from the image data, and a cyclically patterned object determination unit which determines an object to be a cyclically patterned object when the phase difference detection unit detects multiple high-correlation extremums. When an object is determined to be a cyclically patterned object, it is assessed as to whether difference between a current focusing lens position and a focusing lens position represented by one of the high-correlation extremums corresponding to a position closest to the current focusing lens position is out of a predetermined range or not (S23). When it is assessed to be out of the predetermined range, the focus adjustment operation is carried out based on the extremum corresponding to the position closest to the current focusing lens position (S29).</p> |
