PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a friction material which suppresses wear loss of a partner material to a minimum, has excellent thermostability, and can obtain a stable friction coefficient.SOLUTION: There is provided an inorganic fiber-bonded ceramic composed of : a plurality of amorphous fibers which are composed of Si, Ti, C, and O and in which crystalline particles of SiC and TiC are dispersed; and an amorphous material which is composed of Si and O, or in some cases Ti and C and in which crystalline particles of TiC present so as to fill spaces between the amorphous fibers are dispersed, and the inorganic fiber-bonded ceramic includes a 1 to 100 nm thick boundary layer which is composed of amorphous and/or crystalline carbon and is present on a surface of the amorphous fiber ceramic. In the inorganic fiber-bonded ceramic, average particle diameters of the crystalline particles of SiC and TiC are of 50 nm or less which are obtained using a Scherrer's equation from half value widths of their powder X-ray diffraction peak values. There is also provided the highly thermostable friction material composed of the inorganic fiber-bonded ceramic. |
