1,095,464. Rolling; twisting. W. HUFNAGL. Feb. 22, 1965 [Feb. 22, 1964], No. 7555/65. Headings B3E and B3M. A method of working bar or wire comprises passing a continuous length in the cold state through an opening formed by a set of rotatable rollers for forming ribs and/or grooves in the bar or wire and through rotating means for continuously imparting a rotational movement while the bar or wire is passing through said rollers, the rotating means having independent drive means. The rollers rotate in a plane perpendicular to the direction of movement of the bar or wire. A torsional movement is thus imparted thereto and a fractional or compressive force may also be applied. An additional set of rollers may rotate it in the desired direction. Such additional rollers can be mounted in front of or behind the main rollers. Such rollers may impart a slight shaping operation to produce a certain strength and/or elongation. The rotary movement can also be obtained by driving the main rollers and also the tool head in which the rollers are mounted. If a relative movement is produced between the rollers and the tool head, a rotatory movement is also imparted to the wire.
