The invention comprises acetylenic ketones containing ethylenic bonds of formula <FORM:1090165/C2/1> wherein R is an alkyl, aralkyl or cycloalkyl radical or an aromatic or heterocyclic residue which may be substituted; m is 1-4; n is 2-4; and R1 is a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, acyl radical or an aromatic or heterocyclic residue that may be substituted. They are prepared by oxidation of the corresponding alcohol with e.g. manganese dioxide or chromic anhydride. The starting alcohols may be prepared by (i) reaction in a solvent of R-(CH=CH)m-CHO with an alkali metal acetylide (alkali metal)-(CC)n-R1 followed by hydrolysis, (ii) reaction in a solvent of R-(CH=CH)m-CHO with a Grignard reagent (halogen)-Mg-(CC)n-R1 followed by hydrolysis or (iii) the Cadist and Chodkiewicz reaction of Br-(CC)yR1 with R-(CH=CH)m-CHOH-(CC)x-H wherein x+y=n.ALSO:Paraciticidal and fungicidal compositions comprise a compound of formula:- R-(CH=CH)m-CO-(C)n-R1 wherein R is an alkyl, aralkyl or cycloalkyl radical or an aromatic or heterocyclic residue which may be substituted; m is 1-4, n is 2-4 and R1 is a hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, acyl, or aryl substituent or an aromatic or heterocyclic residue which may be substituted, in admixture with an inert diluent or carrier and if desired with unspecified microbicides. |
